We switched on Possession knowing it would not live up to our memories of the book. We've watched bits--the scene in the lift is so remeniscent somehow of Sliding Doors that we thought we'd accidentally changed channel or sometihng. Is there anything, beyond character names, that survives from the novel, we wonder. We could check. It's on the shelves, in a first edition hardback. We remember spending an entire weekend reading it in our very (cut-glass accent) nice bedsit in Cheltenham whlist the anti-Poll Tax demo went on in the town centre (now, that dates me!). But we know we can't ever pick up that volume again. We know that the bookmark is still there. It's the point at which our mother decided that a hardback was too heavy to hold up. You'd think after 14 years we could pick up the book and read through that point. And we can't.. Stupid.
We did have a random other maternal memory/thought, but we can't for the life of us remember what is was. Blame the previous--or the wine.
