Exercise in Nostalgia
Mar. 29th, 2005 12:15 amResolved to buy no books over the weekend, so returning with a stash only just into two figures was a partial success. And I've finished one already. Prompted by the reports of Andre Norton's death, I'd looked for her novels in our little local library, mainly to confirm that I hadn't noticed any there in the past. It's not a hard task to check, since there isn't a lot of sf, f or horror. So I bought a copy of Judgment on Janus from a helpful porcupine. This was, due to one public library I used refusing to allow me to borrow Catseye because it was in the adult section (despite being a Puffin), the first Andre Norton I ever read. I'd be about 10 or 11. I didn't remember much about it, beyond the terrific forest (or forests?) and the owl-like animal companion. It was enjoyable rediscovering it, even if it felt a little thin, and I found the one-sidedness of the description of the religious sect rather annoying. One more added to:
