Well, not precisely.


Way, way back, at least one computer ago (and the newer extant PC is not much younger than Looby Loo), I'd had the SETI@home project running as a screen saver. Can't remember why I stopped, but it's probably to do with the change from one PC to the next.


More recently, I'd got the ClimatePrediction model running in a similar fashion. It fell over quite soon after starting and I never did manage to solve its problems (could've been when we got the broadband connexion or when that went belly up and killed the first cable modem we had).


Yesterday, I got them both running. BOINC has made all the difference. It's all working fine and, despite the fact I offered them equal billing, SETI proceeds faster than global warming. So maybe there's hope for us after all: the friendly aliens will come and rescue us before we're all crammed onto our tiny atolls.
