The aliens are winning

Well, not precisely.

Way, way back, at least one computer ago (and the newer extant PC is not much younger than Looby Loo), I'd had the SETI@home project running as a screen saver. Can't remember why I stopped, but it's probably to do with the change from one PC to the next.

More recently, I'd got the ClimatePrediction model running in a similar fashion. It fell over quite soon after starting and I never did manage to solve its problems (could've been when we got the broadband connexion or when that went belly up and killed the first cable modem we had).

Yesterday, I got them both running. BOINC has made all the difference. It's all working fine and, despite the fact I offered them equal billing, SETI proceeds faster than global warming. So maybe there's hope for us after all: the friendly aliens will come and rescue us before we're all crammed onto our tiny atolls.
