Feeding a baby's no different to answering a mobile in terms of the simple rudeness of disrupting a formal social situation.

A breastfeeding baby is substantially less interruption than a mobile phone conversation, in my experience.

And party guests, for goodness' sake, are grown-up enough to amuse themselves for ten minutes.

Well, if we're assuming party guests so immature they can't deal with a woman breastfeeding OMG IN FRONT OF THEM, they are obviously not grown-up enough to amuse themselves for ten minutes. A party guest who is that immature should go away to sit by themself in a quiet room for ten minutes, leaving the grown-ups to talk.

You appear to be saying that I should just repress and ignore the fact that seeing these things makes me uncomfortable, and allow the parents of future generations to violate my sense of the sane boundaries of intimate relationships if they feel like it.

Why, yes, I am. And if you feel incapable of repressing/ignoring your reaction to a baby at nurse, the polite thing to do would be to unobtrusively get up and leave the room, rather than make everyone else share your discomfort.

I thought I was engaging in a productive discussion about the underlying issues and expecting parents to be farsighted and responsible just as I would other adults.
