I've been crocheting a lot of these little guys - fidget octopode! I have them in trans, non-binary, ace, rainbow, lesbian, rave and glow-in-the-dark colorways. They're for my table at a convention in February of 2026, though I'm willing to take commissions now.

We're having to rebuild the search server again (previously, previously). It will take a few days to reindex all the content.

Meanwhile search services should be running, but probably returning no results or incomplete results for most queries.

My First Kandi Cuff

Hello all! I do all sorts of crafts, but recently I picked Kandi making back up! I used to make make singles back 10 or so years ago. I was always impressed by all the cool cuffs people would make, but I guess I never figured it out. Recently I checked out a newer-to-me queer group in my town and a few people there make Kandi! They had some really cool designs. A few people in the group are plural too, and make bracelets for their headmates. The whole thing made me really interested in picking it back up again!

I followed the tutorial on Kandi Patterns and changed around a few of the colors.

It's been great to see the posts kicking things off for this community! I've been trying to spread the word and am happy to announce that there are now 6 affiliates for [community profile] everykindofcraft: [community profile] icontalking, [community profile] tatting, [community profile] justcreate, [community profile] get_knitted, [community profile] homemade2homemade, and [community profile] crochet.

[community profile] icontalking is gearing up right now for its annual tutorial/ask the maker event. So if you've ever wanted to know how to do something graphic related, chances are some of these experts can help you out!

Although I've tried to contact many communities there are undoubtedly ones I've missed because of specialized names or perhaps not matching their listed interest exactly. If you know of any I could reach out to, do let me know below.

Also, if there are people you know who post about crafts, tell them about [community profile] everykindofcraft! It would be lovely to be a hub for all sorts of works 😊

Lastly, I came across the following cartoon and thought it was very on point about sharing our work as well as doing crafts in the first place:

Repainting doll faces

I mentioned in my last post here that I had repainted the face on one of my doll's house dolls, and I thought people might like to see some before/after photos. Here are the weird/scary faces the dolls came with.

I spotted this video about harvesting, shaping, and firing wild clay.  I did that back in high school at Ancient Lifeways Camp.  It was a lot of fun to dig and clean the clay, then make things.  Our theme was Sumeria, so we made oil lamps (harder than you'd think) and cuneiform quotes.  I also made a ceramic goddess figurine.  We used a pit fire, which helps keep the temperature more stable.  If you have a source of natural clay, this kind of project is well worth trying.

We could use tags for Clay or Ceramics and Video.  You might want something like Ancient Crafts or Historic Methods or the like.

Sharing some crafts I do

I'm working on my second doll's house, which is going to be the home of Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson and Mrs Hudson, as well as incorporating a shop on the corner of the plot. I've been steadily making little things for this one including a gladstone bag for Dr Watson (because he has to have one!).

Here he is holding it so you can get an idea of scale. I repainted his face and redressed him as the original face looked like something out of Cabaret....!

Wish the pendant had come out better in the photo, it's so pretty in person. But it's also easier to see the beading pattern and colors in the pic so I guess it works out. Read more... )

Back in school, I read the Holocaust memoir If This Is A Man by Primo Levi, and I printed it out. I had it as a stack of plain half sheets (not signatures) held together with binder clips. Since getting into bookbinding, I wanted to try and make that print out nicely bound, giving it the respect it deserves and making the print out much more readable.

This was my first time doing a perfect bind (gluing the pages along the spine rather than sewing), and I think it went pretty well. I did about 4 layers of PVA glue, and it seems to be holding up well. This was also my first time adding a title to the cover. I used Black Sumi Ink and brushes to do the cover design with rubber bands around the book for the straight edges.

For the page edges, I did an extra sanding with the fine grit that really helped with the uneven flecks/scraps that I had on the last book.

Good evening! This seems like a fun little community so I figure I'd contribute a bit. I sometimes make my own cross stitch patterns in MS paint and this was one of them.

Does anybody else try and make their own patterns, be it cross stitch or any other medium?

Fanbinding: "mulberry down!!"

More adventures with fanbinding! "mulberry down!!" is a short story/novella by Nicole Kornher-Stace. It's original work about portal fantasy and dreams and bonds up on the internet archive here.

Slim bound book with blue tree cover and gilded edges

I wanted to try out edge gilding (iron on). Sanding the edges fine and using a tiny iron helped, but it still came out pretty flaky and not even. I'm gonna mess around with the sanding more to avoid weird edges, and I'm gonna try using beeswax to seal it before flexing the pages.

This bind is a little wonky. The spine ended up angled, but I sanded the edges straight and then didn't align the cover properly. I'm still pleased with it though!

More pictures below.
