Tuesday Musings

First, from The Guardian:

"...Anita Brookner’s novels, populated as they are by self-effacing spinsters..."
"Spinsterish women, maybe. Spinsters though?

Assuming we're talking about protagonists only:

  • Dr Weiss in A Start in Life marries and is a widow by the end of the book.

  • Blanche Vernon in A Misalliance is divorced and her husband returns to her at the end of the book.

I concede that there's Edith Hope in Hotel du Lac.

(I'm going to have to read the entire canon, now, to get the figures, aren't I?)

Second, when I go to heaven I want it to consist solely of Len's backing singers. If there's anyone else there I'd rather go elsewhere.

Third, I have neither the brains nor the energy to wrest control of the keyboard from the cat to have a third thought.
