Just off to rename the house.

Why? The cable box (for the TV and not the cable modem) is kaput.

We lost service on both TV and modem at lunchtime yesterday and when we retried later had modem (tho' slow as mud) and TV, lacking several channels (Radio 3, BBC7, World Service--so little point in having it as far as I'm concerned). M rebooted the thing later on to see if they'd come back and we lost everything (including, significantly, BBC1, which had been there before). Knowing how long it takes to get through to nt(hel)l, we didn't ring immediately. Sadly, they close at 8.00 and by the time I'd (my bill, so they won't talk to anyone but me) got Looby Loo off to bed and read to it was too late. Was on the line at 9.02 this morning and finished talking at 9.30. Complicated problem? No, the usual waiting time:

  • asking me to input my phone number to direct me to the right area
  • telling me about the missing channels in my area (ITVs and Ch 4s now missing)
  • asking me to switch off and on again (been there done that several times over).
After the--is it mandatory--fifteen-minute wait, I got a very helpful (young?) Scotsman, who apologised lots for everything, asked me for my phone number (Given that to them already, haven't I?) or account number, got me to clean the chip on the card in the box (after I'd told him it was singed, which it is, tho' apparently this happens and is not a problem [yup, the boxes get so hot inside they singe their own smart cards!]), tried powering it on it again. It could be an area fault since most of CB4 and CB5 are experiencing problems, but we've got an engineer booked for Wednesday afternoon (if they turn up whilst I'm out getting LL from school, I'll have to book another appointment) just in case we don't get there service back this afternoon.

So, no TV and no BBC7 (well I could use the PC, but the sound quality is crap). LL hasn't complained about losing her TV programmes yet, but has already asked about Dr Who. So, pleased as I am that she's got her priorities right, I'm not looking forward to explaining that we won't get to see it this week. We do have DVDs to watch--some of mine are even suitable for little girls (to be honest, if LL can cope with Dr Who, she could probably cope with most of the DVDs, which are no more scary).

Roll on Wednesday.

Aaargh! I hope it does turn out to be a general fault that gets fixed quickly.

As for Doctor Who, I could do you a tape, if we could work out how to transfer it to you.

Good news! I hope it stays that way.
