Got a good view of the tiger for the first time. The first glimpse of the stripy head just visible behind a rather impressive display of red-hot pokers was probably worth an attempt at a photo. Later, he deigned to take a quick stroll and marched along the edge of his enclosure for a good while, either enjoying the sun or the cool air after the hailstorm. Or maybe it was the array of tempting live morsels just the other side of the fence: a whole pack of pre-schoolers to choose from?
There was a dead female blackbird lying inside the tiger enclosure. It looked like it had flown into the glass of the window in the viewing area: no obvious sign of damage, but a badly skewed neck. The tiger hadn't needed a snack, evidently, since the corpse was still there when I went back later. Tiger too well fed to bother? Blackbird too small to be worth bothering about? Presumably, there's a nest somewhere full of hungry chicks. Do male blackbirds also feed their young?
The black panther, who previously I'd always seen pacing in that slightly manic I've-been-in-a-cage-too-long fashion totally repetitively, was stretched out and taking an interest in the world outside its prison. So I got a better look at him than I have before too. I've always rather pitied him in the past; he looked saner and happier this time.
The eagle owls had a very large fluffy offspring.
Due to this being the first non-Winter visit I'd made to the zoo, I got to see all the tortoises and turtles, too.
All this glimpsed between supervising Looby Loo, for whom the same zoo meant:

  • bouncy castle
  • dozens of ride-on animals all requiring 20p pieces to induce movement
  • over-processed cheesy snacks for lunch
  • a variety of friends to run around with.

Animals? Well, LL says she liked the zebra best, but I think that's mainly because she saw them first, before all the other distractions kicked in. She did notice the tiger, claimed not to be scared of him, and proceeded to completely uninterested in him.
Soaked, sunburned, and completely exhausted. And writers' group in the evening. So the brain's tired too
