A Quiet Day
Jul. 14th, 2002 11:34 pmAnd thank goodness. To recap:
A lot of washing was done, also some ironing. nothing of great interest and constructiveness.
The ants did not return.
Fought with roadworks and concrete mixers (the big kind on the back of a truck) and may yet continue the fight. For those interested, I ranted on the cam.misc newsgroup: "Danger to Pedestrians around Tesco Site on Newmarket Road". I'll be chasing various council officials tomorrow, I guess, if the wind hasn't left the sails too much. Risking life and limb to that extent rather ruined the day.
The ants seem to have pushed out all the corpses from their tunnels onto the kitchen floor. I await further developments. May have to buy more ant killer.
This was party day. First Off
Forty minute slog across town pushing push chair through the already too great heat....
The sun turned up to order, the garden contained a climbing frame and swing and, still being assembled as we arrived, the most amazing combined bouncy castle cum paddling pool. Small children ran round, got wet, ate (Looby Loo it has to be said didn't do much of the last item). Parents drank tea, coffee, wine, sat in the sun.
Discovered that LL's best friend is leaving nursery. She and her mother will be living on the Isle of Islay, off the Western Highlands of Scotland, by the end of the year, near a distillery. It's not my favourite island, isn't Islay, but I am very jealous.
Left late, and not the last to go, and slogged back across town. Retraced steps partway, due to Looby Loo claiming to have dropped one of her presents from her party bag. Added at least another quarter mile, in the lunchtime heat, to the return journey. LL sitting on offending item the whole while. grrrrrrr And she thought it was hilarious. grrrrrrr
Cooled down, set off in opposite direction to...
Where small children ran around happily for the afternoon--I'm always immensely grateful when friends who do not have children of their own have parties where their guests' kids can come along for the afternoon. I would never have done it, did do it for my birthday last year, but probably won't again: it's harder in Winter. That's my excuse. Anyway, I've never, despite having one of my own, really liked children.
Much strawberry daiquiri consumed.
At the relevant time, won the toss, and opted to be the dirty stop-out, as opposed to the virtuous parent. And the evening continued pleasantly.
Walked home and got in at about 2.15am. (The ravens need to unwind after parties, and walking home in the dark seems the best way. Those who harbour suspicions about the ravens' vampiric tendencies may continue so to do. We just like being outside at night.) Shattered. Not hung over, having not got desperately drunk.
Total distance walked, only about five miles or so. Mainly pushing a push chair.
And so to the rest of...
And cat sick. I will draw a veil....
Washed up, ironed, made short trip to shops, bumping into an ex-colleague in Debenhams. Sounds like Friday over again. The pedestrian barrier was looking a bit worse for wear, but neither the pedestrian area nor the carriageway was actually blocked. Still, more ammunition, maybe.
Sending some emails, and thence to bed. Zzzzzzz
