We don't want to, but he's mainly talking sense, at least about lottery-winning convicts:

It is in some sense "madness", as the Sun says, that a convicted rapist should win the lottery. But what if Rupert Murdoch won it, or Bill Gates, and decided to hang on to the pay-out? That would be madness, too.

Actually, there's such a neat pairing of the "deserving winner a week or so ago--with associated warm, fuzzy media coverage--and the undeserving winner this week--outrage almost all round and the usual plunk of the Blunkett response. It's amazing just how unable we are to accept the notion of pure chance: we want the fickle finger of fate to be partial. "It could be you. Oh no, it couldn't. You're not good enough."

Must be the silly season, tho' no-one's mentioned it.

Off to butcher a fatted calf in celebration.

Went for a walk this afternoon and listened to the thunder rolling around us. Half the sky was clouded over and half bright sunshine, so maybe Looby Loo's sartorial choice of raincoat plus sunglasses was appropriate. No rain, just the grumbling, loud enough to drown out articulated lorries and the crashes of the demolition of the Lucas garage and Halfords. The rain only started, vigorously, after we had got home.

However, on the way home, to compensate for the lack of rain, there was some paddling.

So, assuming you are dressed either in trousers short/baggy enough to roll up over the kness or can tuck you skirt in your knickers, you have taken off your footwear, and you have access to a paddling pool...
