It is in some sense "madness", as the Sun says, that a convicted rapist should win the lottery. But what if Rupert Murdoch won it, or Bill Gates, and decided to hang on to the pay-out? That would be madness, too.
Actually, there's such a neat pairing of the "deserving winner a week or so ago--with associated warm, fuzzy media coverage--and the undeserving winner this week--outrage almost all round and the usual plunk of the Blunkett response. It's amazing just how unable we are to accept the notion of pure chance: we want the fickle finger of fate to be partial. "It could be you. Oh no, it couldn't. You're not good enough."
Must be the silly season, tho' no-one's mentioned it.
Off to butcher a fatted calf in celebration.
