25 and all washed out

The washing machine has given up the ghost. But at 25-ish, with no maintenance (other than me clearing its filters), no prior troubles, and sterling service in the face of widdling, crapping cats I can't say I surprised. Sad, however, since the replacement will almost certainly not last as long (definitely not, as my dad says of such purchases, "see me out" [he's been saying this for many, many years]).

And I shall miss its clockwork technology.

It was more than half as old as I am (but only just).

That's almost exactly the same as my situation! A few weeks ago, only a couple of months shy of its 25th birthday, my completely maintenance free washing machine suddenly died. I similarly don't expect its replacement to be anywhere near as good.

I currently still hate the replacement. For a start, it doesn't even have all the same settings and then it doesn't believe in my existence when I'm trying to set it (I don't get on well with touch screens generally and apparently these are touch buttons according to someone else with almost exactly the same washing machine history). Its door also opens in the wrong place (too low for my laundry basket to fit).

Unfortunately it wasn't as simple as avoiding a touch-screen. It has what appear to be ordinary push buttons except that they respond like touch-screens - which therefore means they pretty much ignore *me* as being some sort of accident of the environment instead of the person who's supposed to be in charge.

A gadget-using friend says I may have to get a special glove which will make me seem more convincingly like a human than my current skin does when trying to operate these things.
