Why keep a cat?

Why keep a cat,

Better house a hen,
Who swallows rodents
Before doing its daily duty.

Pardon? Now I'm imagining hens cornering and eating a rat. Which is ludicrous!

Well, they (all two of them) cornered and ate a large mouse yesterday.

The last rat they cornered, I failed to step in and kill. I think it was unlikely they would have got it without human help, but they were pretty determined.

I sort of keep a mouse instead (and I've been seeing it quite a lot lately under the bird-feeder). But then I don't want eggs at all.
