Recent Birds

Today: grey wagtail at Bait's Bite Lock and blackcap nearby.
Last week: kingfisher along the back of Coldham's Common.
Two weeks ago: pair of jays on the public footpath into the village.
Not a bird sighting: deer in garden several mornings in past couple of weeks.

Our kingfisher has died, the parkkeeper says. He's waiting for one to move in and take the territory.

I saw cygnets riding on adult swan's back this week, and cootlings in their nest.

Not noticed any cygnets yet.

Sad about the kingfisher--but good to know there's enough around that a new one can turn up.

Today I spotted a goldfinch out the back window of the dining room. Very close. They're truly jewel coloured.

I have seen goldfinches in my mother's garden, balancing on the lavender. Apparently it's good to leave the seed heads on the plants over winter so that small birds can eat their seeds.

I'll take any excuse not to dead head plants ;-)

The largest flockcharm of goldfinches I ever saw was on Coldham's Common, a late summer early evening when the thistles were shedding their seed heads. The thistles seemed to have gained new gold and red blossoms as the finches feasted.
