Not sure of spider's exact identification. But we seem to be sprouting giant beasties at the moment. I had to evict a ginormous bumble bee from the house at the end of last week. I was rather worried for the cats, not so much for the bee (a cuckoo bee of some sort I think; a female, as they're bigger than the males).
I've read that among solitary(ish) bees, particularly large bees overwinter and procreate in the spring. Makes sense of the mammoth buff bottom bees we've seen about our rosemary.
