Don't know what's more amazing: the fact that headteachers have to make such a recommendation or that the parents can't see the inappropriateness of the things for primary school children: Pupils warned not to wears things.

1) I find the linked article very worrying. Personally I think there is enough encouragement of paedophilia already without companies selling "sexy" underwear for pre-teens.

2) Having attended schools with a uniform for all but one year of my primary and secondary education, (though a very limited uniform at my US high school), I think it is totally appropriate for a headteacher to say that certain items are and aren't appropriate. If not, then should we happily accept the right for girls (pre-teen or teenage) to wear bikinis or go topless in the playground?

3) Pupils warned not to wears things. is an amusing respelling ... deliberate, accidental or Freudian? <big grin>

I disapprove of school uniforms. Children never get the chance ot learn to choose to wear appropriate clothing for any particular occasion. But with parents stupid enough allow 10/11 year old girls to wear thongs, maybe uniform's the only option. (I remember, not long after the total abolition of uniform at my secondary school, the long-running debate about camouflage gear and chains, the former, I think eventually allowed, the latter, not: ah the good ol' days of Punk. Wonder how they cope with all the piercings and such these days).

Earlier this year, department store Bhs withdrew its Little Miss Naughty range of padded bras and knickers for pre-teen girls.

The idea that someone would put out a clothing line called "Little Miss Naughty" boggles my mind.

OTOH, I'm not sure that I agree that thongs are only meant to be sexy. *I* think they are uncomfortable as all get out, but I do know people who swear by them. Cotton thongs for every day wear seem to have taken their place beside briefs, bikinis and hi-cuts in equal numbers in the stores. Lots of women must be buying them.

I sort of assumed that the BHS line--which I've never encountered--was based on Roger Hargreaves' Little Misses, the first of whom was Little Miss Naughty. So there's a kind of infanitilisation of "adult" clothing--bras--at the same time as sexualising young girls. All very odd. (Why it's Mister Men but Little Misses I've never understood. I dislike them (and reckon it would be possible to write a quick computer program to create them: they're that formulaic), but Looby Loo likes them a lot.)

I've never got into thong wearing either. They sure don't feel sexy. Not for daily wear anyway.

Oh, I see. I had totally missed Mr. Hargreave's I'm happy to say. Mr. Men & Little Miss seems quite sexist to me too. *sigh* Mr. Man is going to take Little Miss Naughty over his knee any moment, no doubt. *sigh*
