Blackwell's has just emailed me to offer me the opportunity to purchase a signed first edition of Paradise Lost.

Following the link, presumably it's the first edition of the new introduction that is relevent to the signing?
I wonder how just much a signed first first edition would be worth. (/me googles. $60,000 unsigned (http://www.salon.com/media/1997/11/20media2.html).)

The site does not say signed by the author, although that is the usual assumption.

I got rather excited about an alert for a 'signed copy' of The Hobbit on eBay yesterday. Ah, that would be signed by Ian McKellan.

A nice enough signature (tho' I'd really want it paired with that of his nemesis, Patrick Stewart (and they didn't manage to slip him into the cinema epic, did they?)) but not Tolkien.
