Well, so it seems, if you use Barbie as an illustration of the human form. In order to transform from fashionista airhead to computer engineer, Barbie has presumably upped her intellec--and acquired specs (and not sunglasses). Why this deeply embedded assumption that specs=clever and its opposite nospecs=dim? Why perpetrate it?

And, yes, I do believe this is a deeply embedded belief. I've watched it in practice. LL's music teacher speaks to her--and teaches her--differently on days when LL remembers to wear her specs.

I was nicknamed both "Joe 90" and "Brains" at primary school (when I had black-framed NHS glasses).

Yes, I had not consciously noticed that, but thinking on it, you are right. It may be that if your eyes are ageing, like mine, you can get away without glasses unless you want to read. (Remember: one who can read, one who can write, and one to watch the intellectuals.)

Anyway, I'd assume that wearing glassess all the time has not harmed my career.

Like you, I assume that I my glasses-wearing hasn't harmed my career.

This association has far worse consequences "
Anyone thought to be an intellectual of any sort was killed. Often people were condemned for wearing glasses or knowing a foreign language.
