Independent Crash Blossoms*

I'm trying to parse this headline:

Acid attack: Five men questioned over British charity workers being rushed back to London for treatment after acid was thrown at them.

Why the interrogation about sending the girls home?

It wouldn't be so bad, but for the first sentence of the article itself:

Five men have been questioned over an attack on two teenage teaching volunteers after acid was thrown on their faces and chests in Zanzibar.

I'd assume (if I hadn't already read--elsewhere--about this) it was the girls who had suffered the attack, but with that sentence and its pile up of phrases (with all those preopositions) and lack of commas, I'd not be entirely certain.

* Yup. It was deliberate. '"Crash Blossoms" in The Independent' would have been clearer.
