Holbein's portrait of Erasmus gives us a man with dirty, ridged fingernails, the bases of which are darkened. It's deliberate, I suspect. A man sitting with the fruits of his hand drafted labours under one hand. And a beautiful picture. (It's always hands and feet that capture our attention in art.)
