I don't entirely speak Debian (or Ubuntu) but that actually looked like an "and even the 64-bit version doesn't install". I've hit that with some other packages (Maya) in the past.
Are you constrained to an elderly 32-bit machine? AMD64 is old enough you may be able to find a cast-off for not much, perhaps even free if you're lucky.

Linux has made me so lazy about tweaking stuff. It generally installs correctly and just works.
