Hypothetically, if an employer requested that a UK employee work from home as opposed to at the employer's premises, how much accommodation would it reasonable for the employee and their household to make to comply with this?

(There's info on the UK.GOV website for aksing to work from home. Nowt directly about not wanting to. I suppose it could count a relocation.)

I think it has usually been regarded as a privilege or a perk in modern society unlike old-fashioned pre-industrial cottage industry. I recall there are some odd tax breaks (and other weirder laws) associated with having to set aside home space as work space. Part of what you should be able to reasonably demand from an employer, especially if *they* were the ones instigating this move, would have to be full kit and expenses for whatever you do. Eg computers, stationery, partial utility bills and possibly even drinks / snacks if those would normally be provided by the employer in their own workspace. If you were seriously lawyered up (ask Judy?) you could try charging them commercial rent for them using part of your house as an office!

But if you charge them rent then the space probably has to be exclusively for use as a work environment and not also available for use for private/non-work uses. Plus you would need to pay tax on the rent. It's a bit of a win some, lose some thing.

I can send you some things from publications for employers and employees on this, though given my job it does tend to heavily slant to the tax side of things and there's nothing that sets it out nice and neatly. If you want it then email me at my LJ handle @gmail.com
